Using an 80 boost gives you nothing really; you are given health/vit gear which is very under powered on most classes (some classes can get away with it, but only in openworld and pvp) and no resources/money, leaving you to grind in openworld to play catch up. From what you said I am guessing you are low level and used the level 80 boost temporarily? Rangers have a lot of pets available to them. The wolf and raven are just 2 of the 55 that you can eventually obtain. Those 2 are available in the Norn capitol city of Hoelbrak. Just find them and charm them.
Couple of comments on the level 80 boost in your shared inventory slots - using it on a necro gives you gear with Rabid stats, using it on a thief gives you Valkyrie stats, all 7 other professions receive gear with Soldier's stats. This impacted my choice and let me create a condi scourge necro fast and cheap.

To make things a bit clearer: The story tab of the hero panel lets you select from any of the expansion pack chapters/living story episodes you have unlocked, as well as continue your level 1-80 personal story - using the level 80 boost will not progress the personal story in any way!

Using the level 80 boost gives you a set of exotic gear, yes, but it will be bound to the character you used the boost on. On the other hand, you can use it on a character that has already reached max level, like your thief. dwoGRam.
