The level to 80 hero points are exactly enough to get everything for your chore class. Each additional elite specialization requires 250 further hero points. No matter how you reach level 80, you will always have 398 hp + (any gained from hero challenges you have completed) once 80.
For example, at level 21 when you get your first Core Specialization slot and Traits to fill that Core Spec, you will have accumulated 32 Hero Points from leveling. However, it costs at least 44 Hero Points (max 60) to fill in every trait slot in a Core Specialization line, which you want to do as soon after you unlock each Core Spec as possible.
MikeG, please share the easier/faster methods to get to level 80. Seriously, I am all ears as I am just learning the game. After review, crafting for about $5 gets the character to max in a reported roughly 2 hours.

Hi, I'm playing on a free account. I recently got to level 80 and bought the game (physical copy from amazon, will be there in a few days). In the meantime, I noticed that my xp bar is still filling up, but since I don't have access to mastery yet, I was wondering: is this xp wasted or will it be transfered to "mastery xp" once I apply the cd-key to my account?

At level 80 you'll have enough hero points from leveling alone to learn all base class skills and traits. Sooner if you do hero challenges. Elite specs can only be learned once you learned all base skills/traits, so no need to save points.
Tuesday we will get the first big balance patch since the expansion's release so hopefully the situation changes somewhat then. In any case, can someone provide a good guide for getting all the hero points after level 80? (i don't have world completion) How many hours (approx.) will it take to get 250 hero points?
