For 2022, they take their place among a pair of incredibly capable middleweights, the agile, travel-ready KTM 890 ADVENTURE and the extreme, offroad-focused KTM 890 ADVENTURE R.
The KTM 890 Adventure R and the standard Honda Africa Twin basically cost the same in the U.S. at $14 500. At $10 299 the Yamaha T7 is considerably cheaper. This big price difference is mostly due to the smaller engine and lack of electronic safety features and rider modes. The Yamaha also does not have a TFT screen like the Honda and KTM.

The 2024 KTM 890 ADVENTURE is fitted with new, offroad-oriented PIRELLI SCORPION STR rubber. These are ideal for riders looking for durability, handling, and mileage on road, but with the added benefit of being able to conquer offroad tracks and trails with ease. TUNED TO TRAVEL.

Here's my assessment: 1290 beats 890 on-road. 1290 handles better and feel more stable/planted on the road. 1290 is more comfortable for long distance, less buzzy, better performance. For long touring, 1290 wins hands down. That isn't to say the 890 isn't good on the street too, the 1290 is just better in every area.
KTM refused to help despite it being a clear reliability issue. Fun facts: 790/890 run really hot from the super high compression ratios which degrades oil faster. And, the 9300 mile oil change intervals are the highest in the ADV segment. But if you don't follow the book, they can easily deny a claim.
KTM’s 890 Adventure got a deceptively thorough overhaul for 2023 (most parts except the engine were updated), and now KTM has given us a preview of the changes to the 1290 Super Adventure S. Seems it’s not quite as broad an overhaul for next season, but KTM does make some changes to its flagship ADV machine. Like the 890, it seems the 1290 More than just eye candy, KTM says the new looks also improve aerodynamics and rider comfort. There’s also a lower windscreen for better off-road visibility, and yet somehow, KTM says this lower screen also provides better protection from the elements. Mechanically, the new 890 Adventure R gets a 43mm WP Xplor fork and WP Xplor PDS rear shock. IpweLW.
